What’s it like being an Automotive Technician
at Schierl Tire & Auto Service?
-
⦾ What are the shop hours?
Automotive Techs work M-F, 8a-5p, with one hour for lunch. Lunch can be taken on or off site.
NO WEEKENDS!
⦾ What would I be doing?
There are three Tech positions:
Lube Techs are responsible for oil and other fluid checking, flushing, and routine maintenance, plus tire changes/rotation/balancing.Entry Level Auto Techs do all that plus higher-level maintenance, electrical, transmission, fuel, brake, and A/C work.
Experienced Auto Techs do all of THAT plus steering systems and maintenance at a more challenging level. They also help the other techs pick up new skills on the job.
⦾ Is the shop heated?
Yup - year round! Our shops are heated, but not air-conditioned. From spring through fall our bay doors stay open, providing an excellent flow of fresh air.
⦾ What type of tools are provided?
Alignment machine, presses, spring compressors, diagnostic equipment, fluid exchange machines, desktop computer. We pride ourselves on keeping state-of-the-art equipment on site.
⦾ What type of break room do you have?
All our service centers have a separate breakroom away from the production area.
⦾ How many bays does each shop have?
It depends on the location, but typically between 8 and 12 bays.
⦾ How many repair orders do you average?
Depending on the location, we average about 40 vehicles per day.
⦾ What is the parts ordering process?
All parts are ordered by the location’s Service Leader.
⦾ What is the policy on side work?
Family is okay, but we want to avoid any conflicts of interest, such as selling services at work but doing the job personally at home.
⦾ What else is cool about this work environment?
We feature multi-level tire storage mezzanines in most locations, plus the latest state-of-the-art tire & balancer machines and aligners.
-
⦾ Do you offer training or continuing educations benefits?
Continued technical education is included. Usually in the 1st Quarter of the year, and mostly local.
⦾ What are the opportunities for career growth?
We offer a career growth path, from Lube Tech, Guest Service Rep, Auto Tech, Service Leader, to Leader (the site manager).
⦾ What's the performance review process?
There is a pay & performance review every 6 months.
⦾ What type of safety training is required?
Annual safety evaluations and ongoing monthly hoist inspections.
⦾ How do Techs work with and mentor younger Techs?
We work as a team, so all experienced techs help and mentor as needed. You’ll be learning all sorts of stuff on the job!
⦾ How does your shop get involved with the local community?
We help support local fundraising efforts via our parent company, Team Schierl Companies. This includes sponsoring local sports, donating to schools, and supporting the arts in the communities we serve.
⦾ Do you work with local schools to encourage students to enter the profession?
We offer a youth apprenticeship and tech college apprenticeship, as well as tuition assistance via a partnership with Midstate Technical College and Northcentral Technical College.
⦾ Where do you see the shop in five years?
We are continuing to grow and expand to better serve Wisconsin. In 2023 alone, we opened a new location in Tomahawk and added 2 commercial/farm service trucks, bringing our fleet up to 20 trucks.

⦾ How do I apply?
We have an online form that only takes about five minutes to fill out. When you send it in, it goes directly to our team!
⦾ Do you take walk-in applications?
Sure! You’re welcome to fill out an application, and we will follow up with you to schedule an in-person interview.
⦾ What's the in-person interview like?
We meet with you for about an hour or less to get to know you. You’ll interview with one of our division managers to discuss your skills, get to know you as a person, and talk about what we can provide you to help build your career.
⦾ Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests?
We do require a drug test, and we also have a type of personality test. Don’t worry, the personality test doesn’t find out what kind of car you are or anything, it’s mostly to help people understand how different people communicate and how to work together.
⦾ When will I know if I have the job?
You’ll know as soon as we do!
⦾ Will I have to accept the job right away?
Nope. Building a career takes time, so we don’t want to rush you into a decision. Obviously we’ll be excited for you to join us, but sleep on it at least! If you pass on a position, or if we don’t have an opening for your dream job just yet, we will keep you in mind for later.
